Upper Hunter Shire
The Upper Hunter Shire takes in the major townships of Aberdeen known a 'the Birthplace of the Blue Heeler,' Merriwa a 'Breath of Fresh Air,' Murrurundi 'the Crown of the Hunter' and Scone 'the Horse Capital of Australia.'
The Upper Hunter Shire's average annual maximum temperature is 23.9ºC and the average annual minimum temperature is 11ºC.
The Shire provides outstanding educational and sporting facilities to its community. The thriving economic base is centred on a very wealthy equine industry and agriculture allowing the townships a buoyant and well serviced retail arena.
The Upper Hunter Shire Council is currently offering two very different opportunities to the general public; in the way of Scone Airpark which allows interested aviators the opportunity to house their aircraft and/or relocate aircraft businesses to the Scone Airpark located on land parallel to the Scone Airport.
The second opportunity is the Scone Private Irrigation District that proposes to pipe water allocations from nearby Lake Glenbawn to farms in the district enabling them to develop speciality and diverse crops for market.
Each of the major townships in the Upper Hunter holds unique and varied events that attract people from all walks of life. Aberdeen - the Aberdeen Highland Games in July, Merriwa - Festival of the Fleeces in June, Murrurundi - King of the Ranges in May and Scone - the Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival in May incorporating the richest day in country racing - Scone Cup.
